The Manipur government has decided to reopen Indo-Myanmar border gates in Moreh to allow passage for exports of medical items from India to the neighbouring country Myanmar following the Union government's directive. The opening of border gates will be one way and imports from Myanmar will be restricted, the government stated.
The state government on Saturday informed the IGAR (South) and the deputy commissioner of Tengnoupal to take up necessary steps for reopening the Border Gate No 1 and 2 at Moreh for export of urgent COVID related medical items to Myanmar as instructed by the Ministry of External Affairs.
In this regard, the deputy secretary (Home) wrote to the IGAR (South) and Tengnoupal DC and enclosed a copy of UO No.1/ii/104/02/2020 dated July 29 addressed to the chief secretary among others received from the joint secretary (Bangladesh and Myanmar), Ministry of External Affairs (BM Division) Smita Pant on the aforementioned subject.
The letter stated that “the state government has decided to allow opening of gates as one-way, that is to allow exports of medical items from India to Myanmar only and to restrict imports from Myanmar.”
On March 9, the Manipur government sealed the Indo-Myanmar border along Moreh town in Tengnoupal district indefinitely after the country was gripped with COVID-19 pandemic. Moreh which is 110 km away from Imphal is often described as the gateway to Southeast Asia.
