Although a dip in the single-day spike is being witnessed, 73,272 new Covid-19 positive cases pushed India's confirmed tally to 69,79,423.
A total of 6,74,36,031 samples have been tested as of September 23, the ICMR states.
A total of 92,605 more people were found infected with the virus, in the past 24 hours according to the Health and Family Welfare Ministry.
With the surge in new COVID-19 fatalities, India's death toll has crossed 82000 cases.
The Union Health Ministry on Sunday reported India's COVID-19 confirmed tally at 35,42,733 with the highest single-day record of 78,761 cases.
Five most affected states by total tally of cases are Maharashtra (718,711), Tamil Nadu (397,261), Andhra Pradesh (382,469), Karnataka (300,000) and Uttar Pradesh (197,000).
