The 44 Assam Rifles under the aegis of 22 Sector IGAR (East) along with Save Rivers Foundation planted tree saplings to commemorate World Animal Day under the theme 'Forests and Livelihoods: Sustaining People and Planet' on Monday.
To spread the importance of forest cover for sustainable development for humanity and planet at large, a Jan Bagidhari plantation drive was organised at various parts of Tamenglong including Akhui, Azuram, Gelnel and Dikiuram villages and planted as many as 4,500 tree saplings.
Speaking to the Imphal Free Press, 44 Assam Rifles Adjutant said it is necessary to stop cruelty to animals and provide better living conditions for them around the globe.

He said, the day is very significant in caring, protecting, and spreading awareness of the need to stop the cruelty. It brings people together on the grounds of humanity and an exhibition of love for animals, he added.
The unit in collaboration with Save Rivers foundation distributed free plant saplings in the Dikiuram area of Tamei Sub division. Similar activities were organised in other two sub divisions of the district.
“If a particular animal species is wiped out from the food chain, it creates far-reaching effects in the chain. Cruelty to animals is the most inhumane thing we see today, right from pelting of stones to beating and caning. Hence World Animal Day is celebrated to bring awareness against such forms of cruelty,” he added.
