Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Wednesday extended greetings to the people of the state on the occasion of World Wetlands Day 2023 which falls on Thursday, February 2, and called for collective efforts to save wetlands in the state.
Celebrated every year on February 2, the World Wetlands Day is a global awareness campaign to highlight the value of wetlands, N Biren stated in his message.
It marks the anniversary of the Convention on Wetlands, an intergovernmental treaty adopted in 1971, which now has a global membership of 172 countries. India is also a member country, it added.
Wetlands deliver survival needs for humans, from providing food and livelihoods, sustaining biodiversity and storing carbon, recreation and inspiration, it mentioned.
It further stated that Loktak lake is an ecological marvel of Manipur and is highly important for the state's ecosystem and economy. As such, the state government has been taking up various initiatives to preserve and protect the lake.
“Although the government is coming up with a master plan to rejuvenate the Loktak Lake with a long-term approach; however, the onus of saving wetlands lies on our collective shoulders and not just with the government. On this day, I call upon every one of us to join hands to save our wetlands,” it added.
