Phayeng being the first carbon positive eco-model village of India is the fruit of the 60 years effort of the Chakpa community in conserving the surrounding forest of Phayeng, Manipur Social Welfare Minister H Dingo said on Sunday while lauding the Chakpa community for their contribution towards conserving the ecological balance.
He was speaking to the media during the inauguration of the footsteps (stairs) at Epa Soraren Laipham at Phayeng Umang in Imphal West.
Dingo said that being able to get the carbon positive tag after being a denuded village 60 years ago due to deforestation is an example that the people of a certain region can preserve and conserve its surrounding biodiversity if they intend to do so with dedication.
Regarding the demand for converting the surrounding forest of Phayeng into a "community reserve forest", he promised to appraise the matter to Chief Minister N Biren Singh in order to turn it into action.
Seeking the Almighty’s (Epa Soraren) blessing, the minister called for peace and unity among all the people of the state for heading together towards a prosperous and a progressive society.
Images of various developmental and works and activities taken up in the Phayeng Gram Panchayat since 2017 under the various welfare schemes of the government were displayed at the programme venue.
The event was also attended by pradhan of Phayeng GP, Angom Shyamasakhi, as president; BDO of Haorang Sabal CD Block Imphal West, P Yaitongba, and khulakpa of Phayeng Awang, Toyai, as guests of honour.
