Bird nets seized; birds rescued in Thoubal district

Wildlife activists seized four bird nets and rescued seven live birds Khangabok and Cherapur, Thoubal district early Sunday.

The Joint Coordination Committee on Wildlife and Biodiversity (JCCWB) Manipur on Sunday received a tip off that some miscreants were trying to catch birds by using nets at the wetlands that lies in the adjoining areas of Khangabok and Cherapur, Romesh Ningthoujam, convenor of JCCWB, said.

Romesh said on recieving the information, volunteers of JCCWB, along with the president and members of Khangabok part (III) Leipat Citizens Club, with the help of police personnel posted at Khangabok Moirang Palli outpost led by SI Sh Tomchou rushed to the area and conducted a check.

During the checking, four bird nets were seized and rescued seven live birds. The team arrested the miscreants, but they were handed over to their parents after they were given proper awareness and advice, Romesh added.

Romesh continued that forest department and wildlife lover clubs and organisations have been conducting awareness programmes at different places and on social media on saving wildlife animals for many years.

Unfortunately, some miscreants indulged in unlawful activities, he added.

Romesh appealed to the people not to catch wildlife animals and birds at any cost stating that they are the real friends and that without them, it is impossible for human beings to survive on this earth.
