Sadu Chiru Waterfall located at Leimaram in Bishnupur district, Manipur will now be opened to visitors on Sundays, but business establishments around the tourist site will be restricted on the day, Chiru Union, North East India, said.
Chiru Union (NEI) stated in a release that Sadu Chiru Waterfall is now opened on all days to the public, as students, working class, outsiders and tourists may see Sunday as an appropriate day. Hence, using limited maintenance staff on a rotational basis, the said tourist site is opened on Sundays, it stated.
"This will enhance the economy of the neighbouring villages as well on a day-to-day basis through sale of commodities," it said.
It further said that the waterfall was closed during the pandemic but with the easing of lockdown rules by the government, it has been reopened.
However, it remained closed on Sundays to ensure that the site is cleaned, maintained and disinfected and also to control sale of illicit substances. Illicit items are sold more on Sundays as more tourists visit the place on the said day, the union said.
The general consensus on profit versus public order is weighted to ensure the health of the waterfalls and its upkeep despite losing a day’s business on Sundays, the union said while also welcoming the present war on drug mission launched by CM N Biren Singh.
Besides this, tourists, students etc. are at times left disappointed as they are unable to visit the place on holidays like Sunday.
Viewing all these, an emergency meeting was convened by the apex body of the Chiru Union, North East India, whereby it was unanimously resolved to open the waterfall on Sundays for visiting tourists on a restricted basis by not allowing any business establishments to open on the day.
