Google is "working closely" with Jio to develop an affordable smartphone, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said Thursday, according to reports.
In the effort to develop an entry-level, affordable smartphone, Google entered an agreement with Jio in 2020.
While the pricing and the launch date is yet to be announced, the Google CEO was quoted as saying in a virtual conference that the two companies are committedly working on producing an affordable smartphone.
Pichai expressed the company's commitment to the joint project as a responsible partner.
Google had bought 7.7 per cent stake in Jio Platforms for Rs 33,737 crore in 2020 as a part of the 'Google for India Digitisation Fund' .
Pointing out that the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for more affordable access to smartphones and computing, Pichai said, "it just deepened our efforts there".
