Pongal tournament kicks off in Manipur's border town Moreh

The 24th Anniversary of Pongal Festival in Moreh will be held on January 15.

A Pongal tournament began at Sunrise Youth Club ground Moreh Ward No IV Tengnoupal district Manipur on Saturday.

CO 5 Assam Rifles Col Raza Israel attended the opening ceremony as chief guest while general secretary Tamil Sangam KBS Manniam attended as functional president of the event. 

Deputy commandant 5AR Mahesh Dutt, president Hill Tribal Council Victor Limthang Touthang, president Meitei Council Moreh M Thoiba Singh, president ACODOM Th Budha Meetei, president MMCM Md Rajaouddin and president Gorkha Samaj Samiti Durga Sharma Archarya also attended the guests of honour in the opening ceremony.

Pongal is a harvest festival celebrated by the Tamil community. It is a celebration to thank the Sun, mother nature and the various farm animals that help to contribute to a bountiful harvest. Celebrated over four days, Pongal also marks the beginning of the Tamil month called ‘Tai’ which is considered an auspicious month.

The festival falls on the 14th or 15th of January each year. Tamil residents of Moreh town celebrate Pongal festival every year. Organising various events of sports, prayer to god, offering of dishes and painting of Rangoli in Tamil houses were the main events of the celebration. 

Tamil Sangam Moreh general secretary KBS Manniam said that the 24th Anniversary of Pongal Festival in Moreh will be held on January 15.
