National Sports University pays tribute to Major Dhyan Chand

National Sports University celebrates National Sports Day 2023 with a week-long programme of various sports competitions and activities.

National Sports University, Imphal, celebrated National Sports Day 2023 on Tuesday, commemorating the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand with the theme “Sports as an enabler for an inclusive and fit society”.

The students, faculty members, staff, their families, and friends participated in the celebrations where Ng Sonia Chanu, Arjuna Awardee (Deputy Superintendent of Police, Sports) Manipur, graced the occasion as a Special Guest and was facilitated by the Vice-Chancellor (Officiating), the registrar of the varsity said in a press release.

As a part of National Sports Day 2023, a Week-long Programme with various Sports competitions and activities was conducted from 25th August 2023.

The overall competition was named the Major Dhyan Chand Trophy-2023 and concluded on 29th August 2023 with a tribute to Legendary Major Dhyan Chand.

Poster Making and Photography competitions for the students were also conducted with prizes distributed to the winners of the competitions, the release said.

Modest awards were also given to sportspersons representing the country from the National Sports University.

Vice Chancellor (Officiating) Prof. Usha S Nair addressed the gathering and emphasised that the National Sports Day is a celebration and tribute to the nation’s sports heroes and champions, honouring their contribution and dedication towards bringing laurels to the country, the release said.

Dr Laishram Dibamani Singh, Registrar, NSU, expressed appreciation for the event and motivated the students to strive towards the level of dedication shown by legendary athletes. He emphasized the importance of making sports an integral part of our lives to promote fitness and good health.

Dr Shyam Sunder Rath, Dean of Students Welfare, NSU, also addressed the gathering.

Exhibition Hockey match between faculty and students was also conducted, followed by the skill demonstration with the theme “Sports as an enabler for an inclusive and fit society” by the students of NSU, the release added.
