The ongoing construction of the National Sports University (NSU) at Koutruk is likely to be delayed following a ban by Kuki militants in the wake of the violence that broke out in the state since May 3.

The construction of the Sports University is carried out by Balindar Construction Limited under NBCC India Limited, a central public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs.

According to sources, the construction workers were reportedly warned by Kuki militants to leave the construction site by May 30. Around 2000 labourers of Balindar Construction Limited were engaged in construction of the Sports University.

The labourers were compelled to stop the construction activities and leave the site in fear for their lives after warning and indiscriminate firing by Kuki militants from Haraothel side towards Senjam Chirang side.

Around 80 officials of the construction company are left to guard the Sports University and the construction machinery along with help from some VDF and unarmed personnel of Sekmai Police Station.

In view of the situation, locals of the area have urged the Central and state government to deploy additional security forces in the area to enable resumption of the construction activities.
