Manipur athletes bag 68 medals at International Masters Championship

The championship, which took place at Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar International Sports Stadium in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, from June 5 to 7, saw the participation of 16 male and 26 female master athletes from Manipur.

Master athletes of Manipur showcased an impressive performance at the 1st International (Invitation) Masters Athletics Association Bharat Championship 2024, clinching a total of 68 medals, including 30 golds, 21 silvers and 16 bronzes.

The championship, which took place at Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar International Sports Stadium in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, from June 5 to 7, saw the participation of 16 male and 26 female master athletes from the state.

The contingent from Manipur was led by team coach L Ashakumar Singh and team manager Ch Ranjit Singh, who played crucial roles in guiding and supporting the athletes throughout the competition.

The return of 17 of these master athletes to Manipur on Wednesday was met with a warm and jubilant welcome at Imphal Airport.

Family members, local clubs, and state forces gathered to celebrate their achievements and to honor their hard work and dedication.

Nongmaithem Ranjana Leima from Khontha Ahallup, a standout performer who secured one gold and two silver medals, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the people of Manipur for their unwavering support.

Speaking to the media, she highlighted the importance of the community’s encouragement and acknowledged the role it played in their success.

The master athlete emphasised the significance of perseverance and dedication in sports, urging young athletes to remain committed and to strive for excellence.

“You have enough time and good supervision to bring fame to Manipur,” Ranjana encouraged.
