Newly-elected President Droupadi Murmu also extended her wishes to Mirabai Chanu for her gold medal win.

Meanwhile, Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam had been hailed by many as ‘Mirabai 2.0’. Lifting weights literally and metaphorically off her shoulders, the 23-year-old displayed calmness and confidence on her way to wearing silver by lifting a total of 202kg (86 kg in snatch, a Games record of 116kg in clean and jerk) in the Women’s 55kg Weightlifting final. Her personal best total and only one less than the gold winner, Adijat Adenike Olarinoye of Nigeria.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has also hailed Saikhom Mirabai Chanu and Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam for their exceptional performance at the Commonwealth Games.

He congratulated PM Narendra Modi for taking special care for Mirabai in times of her difficulties and said, ‘There is no greater feeling than seeing our Tiranga fly high on the world stage.’

Manipur Governor La Ganesan on Sunday expressed happiness to learn that Saikhom Mirabai Chanu and Bindyarani Sorokhaibam have won Gold and Silver Medals in the Commonwealth Games at Birmingham in Weightlifting category, opening the first medal account of this Country.

Mirabai and Bindyarani have made India proud in general and Manipur in particular by these achievements, stated a release issued by Governor’s Secretariat, Raj Bhawan, Imphal. This will, indeed, act as an inspiration for their colleagues and juniors, it stated.
