Chandel Police FC went down fighting to Cheengkhu YC by 5-6 goals in sudden death shootout to stake a berth in the semifinal of the DC Chandel Trophy Second Division Football Tournament 2023 played at Sports Complex, Chandel.
Chandel Police YC, who had never been beaten in the tournament, found their nemesis in Cheengkhu YC as the latter ruffled the net as early as in the 2nd minute from Thangkam to enjoy the lead in the first half.
However, Chandel Police pulled up their reserve energy in the remaining minute of the game and by sheer effort of Samson got the equaliser in the 76th minute to level the scoreline 1-1 goals till regulation time.
Leading to the penalty shootout, both teams put in four goals each while wasting one each, needing sudden death goals to decide the outcome of the game. For Cheengkhu YC, Thangkam proved the lucky charm as he converted his kick while Policemen Micha kicked missed the mark for the sad exit.
Chandel Police player Micha and Cheengkhu YC player Shelminthang got yellow cards in the match.
In another quarter final match, Chakpikarong YC got the better of Monsang Pantha YCC by 4-3 goals during sudden death as well, to make their way to the semifinal as well.
Goalless in normal time play, both teams were exposed to penalty shootout where each team managed three goals each. But in the sudden death, Monsang Pantha player NG. Borlin missed the goal but for Chakpikarong team, BD Phowlngam proved lucky to guide his team to the last four stages.
Two Cheengkhu players BD. Abba and BD. Phowlngam received yellow cards in the match.
The semifinal matches will be played on Thursday with Ziontlang SYC taking on Chandel Christian YC at 12 noon while in the second match, ChakpiKarong YC will face Cheengkhu YC at 2 pm.
