Manipuri rock band raises funds for displaced families

Meewakching, has launched a tour to contribute to the welfare of those displaced by the unrest in Manipur and raised over Rs 80,000 so far.

Manipuri rock band, Meewakching, has launched a tour to contribute to the welfare of those displaced by the unrest in Manipur and raised over Rs 80,000 so far.

A release stated that with the band’s ‘Live Aid For The Relief Tour’ made possible by SkillBox, an Entertainment Platform, it has played two impactful shows. The first show took place at Urban Mantra Lounge Zoo Road, Guwahati, followed by another at Indie Carnevil (Club Edition), Saket Social, Delhi, it stated.

The tour successfully raised over and generated Rs 80,000, which will be used towards supporting displaced families, it mentioned. The band has already begun the relief work by visiting Tangjeng (Mangjing) Relief Camp, located 52 kilometers away from Imphal, it added.  
It further stated that the said camp accommodates approximately 30 families, totaling around 130 individuals. Additionally, with the money, the band has visited the Okshongbung Relief Camp in Moirang, providing relief materials including but not limited to vegetables, stationery items, charcoal etc. to around 200 people, including children and elderly women, it mentioned.

Meewakching vocalist Silheiba Ningombam expressed that they believe in the power of art and music as a critical tool during times of crisis. “Throughout history, it has been proven that art, and music can change the world. We also stand in solidarity with the artists and musicians whose voices and creativity have been suppressed because of the ongoing conflict,” he said.

Meewakching is a post-punk rock band based in Manipur active since 2019. It has released its debut EP titled ‘Ekhenglakta’ in 2020, it stated. Its debut album, ‘Thengmankhre Hee Ado Lakpa, Eikhoidi Sikhiba Kuire Erolnungda’ was released in 2021, and the latest EP ‘The Land’ with lyrics concerning the Meitei-Kuki Violence was released in August of 2023, it added.
