Pala Wetland in Mizoram has been included among five new wetlands recognised as wetlands of international importance in India. The total number of Ramsar sites in the country has increased from 49 to 54, Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupendar Yadav announced on Tuesday.
"The emphasis PM Shri@narendramodi ji has put on environmental protection and conservation has led to a marked improvement in how India treats its wetlands. Delighted to inform that 5 more Indian wetlands have got Ramsar recognition as wetlands of international importance," Yadav tweeted.
The other four wetlands in India designated as wetlands of international importance included three in Tamil Nadu - Karikili Bird Sanctuary, Pallikaranai Marsh Reserve Forest and Pichavaram Mangrove and one wetland - Sakhya Sagar in Madhya Pradesh.
"Karikili Bird Sanctuary, Pallikaranai Marsh Reserve Forest, Pichavaram Mangrove in Tamil Nadu. Sakhya Sagar in Madhya Pradesh and Pala Wetland in Mizoram have made it to the coveted list," the Environment minister said in another Twitter post.
