Meghalaya government wants HNLC peace talks concluded at the earliest

The National People’s Party-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government said it is committed to ensure talks with the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) are concluded at the earliest.

Addressing the 76th Independence Day celebration in the state capital Shillong, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma informed that the overall law and order situation in the state continues to be by and large peaceful.

He also referred to the HNLC’s willingness for unconditional talks and within the ambit of the Constitution of India as a ‘historic development’.

“The peace talks have started, and the state government is committed to ensure that the talks are concluded at the earliest,” Sangma assured even as he thanked the Government of India for their support.

Stating that his government is taking all possible steps to resolve the long-standing boundary dispute between Meghalaya and Assam, the Chief Minister said discussions to resolve the remaining six areas of difference will begin very soon.

He also informed that the historic MoU was signed between Meghalaya and Assam in presence of the Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi for resolving six of the 12 areas of difference i.e., Tarabari, Gizang, Hahim, Boklapara, Khanapara-Pillangkata and Ratacherra.

The regional committees headed by cabinet ministers from both the states have made field visits, held public hearings and discussions with all stakeholders for these six areas.
