Department of Forestry, Manipur University, in collaboration with INTACH Manipur Chapter and Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), Manipur, celebrated World Bamboo Day at the department of Forestry, Manipur University Canchipur, under the theme ‘Next Generation Bamboo: Solution, Innovation and Design’.
Faculty, department of Forestry, Manipur University, Khwairakpam Romesh and President of Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS) Mayanglangbam Khelendro, among others attended the event, stated a release.
Mayanglangbam Khelendro highlighted the importance of bamboo in trying to make new solutions to environmental issues and sustainable designs, it mentioned.
Guest Faculty at Manipur University’s department of Forestry, Salam Dilip highlighted bamboo’s potential to address key challenges facing modern society, such as climate change, deforestation, and economic inequality.
He noted that fast-growing bamboo contributes significantly to carbon sequestration, serving as a sustainable alternative to traditional wood and plastics. Dilip also explored innovative bamboo products, including applications in construction, furniture, textiles, and energy generation, it stated.
As part of the observance, a bamboo plantation drive was organised by the Department of Forestry, symbolising a commitment to a greener future. Faculty members and students also participated, supporting the university’s environmental efforts.
An extempore speech competition was held, with cash awards presented to the winners, Lanrilu Dangmei (1st place), Korymayum Subhani (2nd place), and Soraisam Hira (3rd place).
