The World Meetei Council (WMC) has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to consider the urgent need for a capable and accountable government in Manipur, all the while demanding the replacement of the current chief minister.

The memorandum signed by WMC chairman Heigrujam Nabashyam and sent to the PM on Sunday, asserted that Manipur deserves a responsible government. It condemned the alleged failure of the chief minister and his inability to restore normalcy in the state even after 17 months.

It expressed grave concern over the ongoing situation in Manipur, which is persisting with no end in sight. It also highlighted observations made by WMC and said that the people of Manipur are in a state of utter confusion and distress due to the prevailing circumstances.

Neither the chief minister nor anyone else has taken responsibility for the chaos that has plagued our state, it alleged. It maintained that in a democratic framework, accountability lies with the head of the government for the outcomes of their leadership.

It asserted that a failure to govern effectively should prompt a resignation to allow for a new government under a new leadership. It further went on to say that the ongoing violence is supposedly tacitly permitted by the central government.

It noted that the central agencies possess the knowledge to understand the cause of the unrest and have the capacity to address it. It further said that the presence of around 60,000 Indian Army and Assam Rifles are ineffective as they allegedly remain mute spectators to the assault by Chin-Kukis against Meetei villages.

It condemned that the same undermines the reputation of the Indian Army not only in Manipur but globally, harming the national interest. It claimed that even though the Army is capable of swiftly intervening and halting attacks on Meetei villages, they lack the necessary orders to do so, resulting in continued violence.

It is apparent that the state government has allegedly failed to communicate critical information to the centre, inhibiting a coordinated response to restore peace, WMC stated. It also highlighted the immense sufferings of the people due to the alleged abject inefficiency of the current CM, and lamented that the people have become refugees in their own homeland.

It reiterated its appeal to the Prime Minister to consider the urgent need for a capable and accountable government in Manipur and expressed hope that with a new leader, peace and normalcy can return to the state.
