Weightlifter found hanging at SAI Complex Imphal

A weightlifter from Manipur, who was found hanging at SAI Complex in Imphal, took a video recording of himself taking his life, police said

A weightlifting athlete who had been residing at SAI Complex, Utlou under Nambol Police Station in Bishnupur district was found hanging around 4 pm on Friday.

The deceased has been identified as one Thenjam Naresh, 22, son of Th Mangoljao from Pukhao Khewa Phruju in Imphal East. He was residing at the complex as a trainee weightlifter, sources said. 

According to police, he reported feeling unwell and did not come to practice on Friday. He had been sharing a room with two other athletes. Both his friends were practicing when he allegedly hanged himself from the ceiling fan of the room, police said.

He took a video recording as he took the extreme step, according to police. In the video, he said, “Nang Pelloko” (This should satisfy you). It is suspected that the incident resulted after a love-relationship went sour.

A case has been registered by Nambol Police Station and the mobile phone has been seized. The body has been handed over to the family members after a post-mortem was conducted at RIMS Mortuary.
