Three people, including a female, were briefly detained by villagers for allegedly guiding a convoy of Central forces at Thagalawai and Kumbi areas under Kumbi police station, Bishnupur district on Saturday noon (June 17).
The convoy belonged to the MAHAR Regiment and consisted of three vehicles traveling from Moirang to Kumbi for an exchange post located at Haotak Hill in Kumbi. The local villagers grew suspicious and feared that the convoy might be transporting additional arms and ammunition.
As a result, a large group of villagers, predominantly women, intercepted the convoy and thoroughly inspected the vehicles. However, upon examination, they discovered that the vehicles contained construction materials such as roofing sheets and barbed wire, but no extra arms or ammunition were found.
Around the same time, former members of the MAHAR Regiment who were vacating their post were also detained by the local mob at Kumbi Bazar.
However, the situation was defused when a police team from the Kumbi police station arrived and explained the purpose of the security convoy's presence in the area, which was solely for the exchange of the post.
After confirming the genuine reason behind the security movement, the villagers decided to release the security vehicles on both sides. Subsequently, a team of state forces arrived and rescued the three individuals who had been initially detained by the villagers.
