Villagers demand release of two abducted by militants

Protesters demanded the release of two individuals from Awang Sekmai Parao abducted at Charhajare, Kangpokpi district by suspected militants on May 15.

Villagers of Awang Sekmai Parao staged a sit-in protest at Awang Sekmai Parao on Friday, demanding the release of two individuals from Awang Sekmai Parao abducted at Charhajare, Kangpokpi district by suspected militants on May 15.

The two individuals are Moirangthem Dewan Meitei, 34, son of late M Jarmasingh and ToijamTomba, 28, son of T Baodhon. Both hail from Awang Sekmai Parao, Imphal West district.

According to the complainant report filed by one Usham Babita Devi at Sekmai Police station, who is the sister-in-law of Dewan, her brother-in-law along with Tomba left home on Saturday for repairing a Tata Truck bearing registration number MN03-0899 at Charhajare and went missing ever since.

Speaking to media on the sidelines of the protest, assistant convenor of the JAC against the abduction Ahongsangbam Ashok Kumar stated that the two persons had been missing since their last contact with the truck owner on Monday last.

He highlighted that the missing truck had been recovered but the two persons were missing.

“The two are simple stone truckers; they are not involved in any untoward incidents,” he said.

He appealed to those unknown miscreants to release the two persons at the earliest as they are the sole bread earners of their respective families.

The complainant report further mentioned that Ibochou who is the owner of the truck last contacted Tomba around 9 am for the last time.

On Tuesday, she was informed by some youths of Kanglatongbi Santipur Nepali that Dewan and Tomba were allegedly abducted by some miscreants suspected to be Kuki militants at Charhajare on May 15 around 5:30 pm.

A case has since been registered at Sekmai Police Station. However, the case was transferred to G-Sapormeina Police Station as the place of occurrence fell under their jurisdiction.
