Verify, confirm before publishing any report: Manipur IPR minister

Manipur Information and Public Relations Minister Sapam Ranjan on Tuesday appealed to all journalists and firms to properly verify news and information before disseminating and publishing it on their channels and social media handles.

He was speaking at the World Television Day, 2023 observance on the theme ‘Accessibility’ at Manipur Press Club, Imphal which was jointly organised by The All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) along with four broadcasters under the union.

“Mediapersons must be extra careful in dealing with sensitive information. Verification and confirmation of the information must be done before publishing or broadcasting,” he said.

AMWJU organised the event as part of its year long Golden Jubilee celebration.

The IPR minister maintained that a tremendous leap in technology had made information dissemination more accessible. “The technology has evolved so much that everyone in modern society carries a piece of it in their pockets everyday,” he said.

On the occasion, Ranjan expressed gratitude to AMWJU for organising the first formal observance of World Television Day. “Television has changed so much over the years but its core usage still remains the same,” he said.

He further wished AMWJU greater achievements in the future and hoped the observance would be held on a larger scale in the coming years.

The observation was divided into two sessions with a panel discussion on ‘How can peaceful coexistence be re-established’ in the technical session. Eminent academicians and professionals took part in the discussion.

During the inaugural session, invitees and participants paid a two-minute silence tribute to the departed journalists of Manipur. Singers under AMMIK also performed various patriotic numbers during the observance.

President of Editors’ Guild, Manipur (EGM) Khogendra Khomdram, president of All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) Bijoy Kakchingtabam and journalists from various media firms along with other eminent personalities took part in the event.

Meanwhile, the observance was also held at Dhanamajuri Community College (DMCC) on Tuesday.

Principal of DM College of Science M Bhubaneshwari, director of DMCC L Hemchandra graced the occasion as chief guest and president while DDK Imphal programme producer Thoudam Brajabidhu, vice president of ISTV Network Th Biswarjit, IMPACT TV News editor Raj Nongthombam and eminent singer Hamom Sadananda attended as guests of honour during the observation.

During the observation, Kh Ishomani, a faculty of DMCC and Mechelle Sagolsem, a student of the college were also felicitated.
