Union Home Minister Amit Shah landed at Bir Tikendrajit International Airport in Imphal on a special BSF plane at around 9.13 pm on Monday on a three-day visit to the troubled state amid high tension and under heavy security.
Amit Shah was received at the airport by Chief Minister N Biren Singh who was accompanied by Works Minister Govindas, Power Minister Th Biswajit Singh, MAHUD Minister Y Khemchand, State BJP president A Sharda Devi, Education Minister Th Basanta Kumar, Minister of State for Home Nityainand Rai, BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra.
Security advisor Kuldiep Singh Chief secretary Vineet Joshi along with top civil and police officers were among those who arrived at the airport to welcome the Union home minister.
Amit Shah who is on a three-day trip to the violence hit state proceeded to the office of chief minister, Manipur and held a closed-door meeting with the chief minister, MoS for Home, Council of Ministers, Sambit Patra, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Secretary (Home), Government of India, Tapan Kumar Deka, Director of Intelligence Bureau (DIB), Chief Secretary, Government of Manipur and Security Advisor.
Amit Shah was briefed by the chief minister on the latest developments and the situation in the state.
Detailed discussions were held from 9:40 pm to 10:45 pm at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat in Imphal and the decision was taken to restore normalcy and bring peace to the state at the earliest.
It was also decided to take necessary action to improve the law-and-order situation and build confidence among the public.
The meeting decided to expedite relief measures and make essential items like petrol, LPG gas, rice and other daily requirements available to the common people.
It was further decided that Compensation at the tune of (a) Rs. 10 lakh (Rs. 5 lakh to be borne by the State and Rs. 5 lakh as Central share) to the deceased persons and (b) provision of one job to the family of the deceased persons.
Telephone lines with the help of BSNL will be installed to dispel rumours as per the decision taken during the meeting.
The Union home minister’s visit to the state comes after 25 days of unprecedented communal violence between two communities—Meitei and Kuki—that resulted in the loss of several lives and property, the burning down of residential houses, places of worship, and other establishments, and has rendered thousands of people displaced and homeless.
During his three-day visit, Amit Shah is expected to visit affected villages and victims of violence and hear the grievances of the people, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai said while announcing the visit of the home minister to the state.
According to Rai, Amit Shah had assured the people of the state that justice will be delivered to all and those indulging in violence will not be spared: “I would appeal to brothers in Manipur to maintain peace and have faith in the system. People from both groups should first decide to maintain peace. I assure you all from the Centre that justice will be delivered to all and those indulging in violence will not be spared.”
