Two independent air traffic control channels, Approach Control Procedural Unit and Aerodrome Control Unit, were inaugurated on Wednesday at the Imphal International Airport by the Airports Authority of India.

The two units are new state-of-the-art air traffic control (ATC) towers to enhance the air traffic movement at the airport.

The inaugural event commenced with the ceremonial lighting of lamps, symbolizing the dawn of a new era in air traffic management at Bir Tikendrajit International Airport, Imphal.

ATC in-charge Sh Subrata Halder said that in the past, the amalgamation of Aerodrome control and Approach control procedural units resulted in numerous challenges, including frequency jamming and VHF overstepping, ultimately compromising air safety. However, with the establishment of a separate Approach Control Procedural Unit, these issues are anticipated to be effectively addressed, thereby benefiting the pilots, he said.

The division of control responsibilities will not only mitigate the risk of frequency overstepping but also distribute the workload among Air Traffic Controllers, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and ensuring a safer airspace. This move underscores our commitment to prioritizing the safety and well-being of passengers and aircraft traversing in the airspace of Imphal, he added.

Furthermore, this development sets the stage for the imminent commissioning of Radar services at Imphal ATC, which will seamlessly integrate with the Approach unit, further bolstering our ability to provide enhanced air traffic services, Subrata said.

Airport director Sh Chipemmi Keishing lauded the concerted effort of the entire team in realizing this historic milestone, emphasizing the tireless dedication and unwavering commitment that made this achievement possible.

General manager of Civil Engineering, Sh Adil provided insights into the ongoing infrastructure projects, including the construction of a new Terminal building and ATC Tower.

The completion of these projects by June 2025 will significantly enhance passenger capacity and equip the new ATC Tower with state of the art systems, ensuring the delivery of unparalleled air traffic services, he added.

The ceremony was attended by station managers from all airlines.
