Two men passed away while one is undergoing treatment after consuming a poisonous substance assuming it for alcohol at Kakching Chumnang Sambal Lei Pareng under Kakching Police Station in Kakching district, Manipur on Friday around 8.30 pm.
As per sources, the deceased have been identified as siblings, namely Yengkhom Ibomcha, 82, and Yengkhom Niladhaja, 74. The man who is currently undergoing treatment has been identified as Naorem Ibotombi, 75. The three individuals resided in Kakching Chumnang Sambal-Lei Pareng.
The trio were drinking alcohol at the residence of Yengkhom Niladhaja, sources said. After they finished the alcohol, one of them brought out a plastic bottle, believing it was a leftover alcohol.
Unfortunately, the contents of the bottle turned out to be a poisonous substance, and immediately fell unconscious after consumption. They were quickly rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Yengkhom Ibomcha was admitted to Jivan hospital Kakching, while Yengkhom Niladhaja was taken to Ema Hospital Kakching. Despite medical efforts, both individuals succumbed to the effects of poisoning.
Naorem Ibotombi, the third individual involved, continues to receive treatment at the hospital and is under observation at Jivan hospital’s emergency observation room.
Police have also retrieved the plastic bottle for further investigation. Following the tragic deaths, postmortem examinations have been conducted at JNIMS mortuary after registering an unnatural death (UD) case. The bodies will be handed over to their families on Sunday.
