Two abducted drivers rescued in Kangpokpi

Two drivers hailing from Assam, who were allegedly abducted by suspected underground cadres from the Kangpokpi district forest hill range, were rescued by a special commando team.

Two drivers hailing from Assam, who were allegedly abducted by suspected underground cadres from the Kangpokpi district forest hill range, were rescued by a combined team of special commando unit of Khabeisoi and Kangpokpi police on Saturday, sources said.

Police sources stated that on receiving specific intel from the 4th Assam Rifles that two drivers were kidnapped by a suspected hill-based UG organisation at Kangpokpi district, five teams of Khabeisoi Special Commando unit and Kangpokpi police rushed to the area and conducted an intensive search and rescue operation in and around Kangpokpi district forest hill range along the National Highway.

The search team was led by OC L Bebekananda Singh and OC Sunil, and under the overall supervision of SP Railways and Special Commando unit, Khabeisoi in charge Th Krishnatombi Singh, it informed.

It maintained that the team rescued the two drivers namely Aninur Khan, 28, and Rakhibul Khan, 30, who were both from Barbetta, Assam.

The team also recovered a four-wheeler vehicle (a white Bolero Pickup, with registration number AS-01ILP-4554) which belonged to one Aminul Huke, 36, from Barbetta, Assam, it said.

As the police team approached, the abductors abandoned the drivers and fled the scene taking advantage of the thick and dense vegetation of the forest, it stated.

The rescued persons and the recovered vehicle were handed over to the business partner of Animul Huke namely Hanjabam Tarunkumar Singh, 35, son of late H Maheshkumar from Wangkhei Khunou under the Porompat police station in Imphal East district, it added.
