The All College Tribal Students’ Union Imphal and the Joint Tribal Higher Secondary School Union on Wednesday demanded unconditional release of the ATSUM leaders who were arrested on Tuesday.
As many as five executive members of ATSUM were arrested on Tuesday after the former announced total shutdown in hill districts demanding tabling of the “The Manipur (Hill Areas) ADC Bill, 2021” in the ongoing Assembly session.
Speaking to the media at Shalom Hall in Imphal, Tribal Student Union GP College president Gracy Kipgen, said the tribal students of Manipur strongly condemned the arrest of the ATSUM leaders.
Stating that arresting of tribal student leaders in every tribal issue has become normal procedure of the state government since the last many years to suppress the tribal rights, she said that the government should have confronted the issue through dialogue instead of making such unwanted arrests.
If they are not released by Wednesday, the tribal student bodies in Manipur will be compelled to take up various forms of agitation in all colleges and schools, Kipgen said. She cautioned that the state government will be held responsible for any untoward incidents that might occur during the protests.
