Transport workers demand security escort, medical team amid unrest in Manipur

The All-Manipur Road Transport Workers’ Federation met with the chief security advisor to apprise him about the current difficulties facing the road workers in the state amid the prevailing unrest.

The All-Manipur Road Transport Workers’ Federation met with security advisor Kuldiep Singh on Wednesday, after apprising the governor of the current difficulties faced by transport workers amid the unrest in the state.

During the meet, the federation apprised the security advisor of the problems motor workers and drivers in Manipur had been facing since the conflict erupted.

The federation also submitted a four-point memorandum to the governor during the meet on May 16.

Speaking to the media in Imphal on Wednesday, general secretary of the Manipur Drivers Association, Ksh Sanjoy Singh said the federation met with the chief security advisor to apprise him of the four-point memorandum and informed about the current difficulties facing the road workers in the state.

“The security advisor had assured to fulfil two out of the four points in the memorandum swiftly; he informed that he would discuss further to fulfil the other two,” he said.

The four points are-‘provide crane and recovery vans on every escort’/ ‘convoy, ambulance with medical team and medicine’, ‘ROP on the highway and provide relief material to stranded motor vehicles’.

He stated that the security advisor had assured to provide crane for the convoys and ambulance with medical team and medicine for the transporters.

Sanjoy pointed out that there had been instances where security escorts fled during incidents, leaving the transporters to fend for themselves. “We informed the advisor of such incidents and urged him to provide abled security personnel for escort,” he added.

“As protestors pelt stones and cause disturbances to vehicles, we need sufficient security escort and highway ROP for safe passage of the vehicles,” he said.

He informed that the cranes would be helpful in moving broken down vehicles to safe locations.

He stated that the demands had been tabled to resolve the immediate plight of the transporters plying on the highways. He extended gratitude to the security advisor for cooperating with the federation.
