The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) Student’s Front on Monday called for the immediate termination of Senior Superintendent of Police (Combat) colonel (retd.) Nectar Sanjenbam from his post for his alleged killing of a young protestor, Khundrakpam Athouba Ningthouja, in Jiribam protest on November 17.
Speaking to the media at Imphal, coordinator of the student wing Ningthoujam Dhanakumar Meitei condemned the aggressive actions of SSP Nectar Sanjenbam in controlling the crowd.
He stated that the shooting of the unarmed 22-year-old was an unforgivable act of brutality of the security forces.
As such, he demanded the immediate termination of the senior SP (Combat) Nectar Sanjenbam from service.
He questioned the legitimacy of Nectar’s appointment.
“He was specially appointed to serve the people but he has failed to fulfill this role. As a retired Indian Army officer, his true colours have emerged,” he said.
He highlighted Nectar’s record of atrocities against Meiteis during his service in the Indian Army and demanded that legal actions be taken against him.
It may be mentioned that the incident occurred during a peaceful protest on 17 November in Jiribam against the abduction and killing of six women and children in Borobekra Sub-Division.
Eye witnesses reported that tensions escalated when the officer confronted the mob and subsequently open fired, fatally shooting Khundrakpam Athouba, and injuring another protestor.
