Khwairamband Keithel Street Vendors Welfare Union (KKSVWU) on Monday staged a sit-in protest at Keishampat Thiyam Leikai demanding vending space at the temporary market.
Addressing media at the sideline of the protest, assistant secretary of KKSVWU, L Nandit said that the union had apprised the authority concerned on the challenges faced by the street vendors owing to the absence of proper vending space over the past few days. However, the authority (Imphal Municipal Corporation) failed to pay any attention, said Nandit.

Nandit said the department of MAHUD issued an order notifying all the street vendors to sell their products at the temporary market on a rotational basis. However, the market is already occupied by certain street vendors not registered with KKSVWU, she said.
“We strongly condemned the indifferent attitude of the authority and urged the authority to immediately intervene in the matter”, said Nandit.

She explained that KKSVWU is a registered body and all the street vendors under the union have been depending on Ima Market for the last many years. The street vendors under KKSVWU are reeling under extreme hardship due to absence of proper vending space, she added.
Nandit appealed to the state to take up immediate measures to address the woes of the street vendors by identifying eligible street vendors and providing vending space.
