The Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee of Manipur (STDCM) has resolved to continue mounting pressure on the government for granting ST status to Meetei/Meitei.
The committee adopted the resolution during its 7th Annual General Body meeting held on Sunday at Thangmeiband Athletics Union (THAU) Hall, Thangmeiband.
Speaking during the open discussion of the meeting, Committee Advisor, Huidrom Jayantkumar stated that railway lines reaching Manipur is no reason to be happy since the indigenous Meetei/Meitei may be pushed to extinction with the possibility of overwhelming number of migrants.
As such, the indigenous people need to be given constitutional safeguard by granting ST status, he asserted. He further said that Rajya Sabha MP Sanajaoba Leisemba taking the demand to Parliament gives a moral boost to the movement.
He also expressed desire for the movement to be expanded across the length and breadth of the valley instead of confining it to Imphal areas.
Annual report and statement of accounts of the committee were laid and passed during the meeting. STDCM president Dhiraj Yumnam, chief patron Moirangthem Naodalenkhomba, senior member, Khomdon Lisam among others were present in the meeting.
