Police arrested six people in connection with the death of RK Bidya @ Devia of Thangmeiband Hijam Dewan Leikai.
Twenty-nine-year-old RK.Bidya @ Devia wife of 34-year-old Laishram Rocky from Thangmeiband Hijam Dewan Leikai was found hanging on Saturday. She was survived by a one-and-half-year-old daughter.
According to the deceased sister Jiteshori, Bidya informed them on the phone that she had been physically assaulted by her husband’s family on Friday at around 5 pm and again assaulted her on the same day at around 8 pm. She was reportedly brought to RIMS hospital by her husband Rocky at 9 pm with serious injuries and later discharged at 10.30 pm, said Jiteshori.
Jiteshori further said that her sister Bidya did not take her call on Saturday morning at around 10.30, then she called Rocky and inquired about her sister but he did not respond properly and disconnected her call. Rocky called the deceased eldest sister Bema and informed her that Bidya hanged herself to death.
Jiteshori rushed to her sister’s house upon hearing the news and found the body in their common room. Local residents and Bidya’s family members stormed the house of Rocky’s Thangmeiband residence on hearing the news.
Jiteshori mentioned that a team from Imphal Police Station arrived at the scene 15 minutes after her arrival. Responding to police queries, Rocky said that his wife’s body was found at around 9 am.
According to local residents, Bidya was extremely harassed by her husband’s family and eyewitnesses narrated an incident that happened on April 21.
Imphal Police Station registered a case regarding the incident and the body has been kept at RIMS mortuary after a State Forensic Science Laboratory team inspected the crime scene.
As per reports, Bidya was found hanging on a ceiling fan using a cloth (Khudei) but the family of the deceased alleged that the body was taken down before the police and family members arrived. Several injury marks were found on the body, said the report.
Police arrested Rocky, his parents, the accused two sisters, and his niece in connection with the case.
Post mortem has been conducted at RIMS mortuary before a magistrate along with a video recording on Sunday. However, the victim’s family has yet to claim the mortal remains.
