Vendors of Ima Keithel on Saturday demanded the government to frame a policy for the survival of their business. They said sales inside the three Ima Keithel in Imphal have immensely declined due to the rapid increase in the number of street vendors in the surrounding areas of the markets,
Ima Keithel vendors are all set to launch various forms of agitations if the government fails to take up appropriate steps at the earliest, said co-convenor of the Working Committee of Ima Keithel, Asem Nirmala, while speaking to the media in Imphal.
Pointing out that the street vendors outside Ima Keithel are selling the same products which are sold inside Ima Keithel, she said that as a result, customers rarely enter Ima Keithel leading to decaying of the fruits, vegetables and fresh fishes they sell.
This drawback leads to difficulties in running the family of those vendors vending inside the Ima Keithel, she added.
Stating that this issue has been raised to the state government on several occasions, she said it is unfortunate that the Biren-led government remained a silent spectator on such an issue.
"Save us from the street vendors overtaking our business. Don't force us to take up protest. Frame a policy at the earliest to address the grievances of the Ima Keithel vendors," the co-convenor said.
During the press briefing, the vendors of Ima Keithel held placards which read, "Frame Nupi Keithel Policy", "Don't erase the history of Nupi Keithel" and "Don't cut off our livelihood", among others.
