Union Home Minister, Amit Shah on Tuesday announced that a roadmap has been created to address the issues in Manipur, assuring that talks are being held with both Kuki and Meitei groups.
Speaking at a press conference, he said that “this is a racial violence, there cannot be any solution until there is a dialogue between them.” However, the government is optimistic about bringing the situation under control and is engaged in discussions with local tribes, he said.
He said that the government has initiated the fencing of the India-Myanmar border to address the root cause of the problem.
Approximately 30 km of the fencing has been completed, and the Central government has approved a budget to fence the entire 1500 km border, he added.
“We have successfully deployed CRPF at strategic locations. To stop the infiltration, we have nullified the agreement between India and Myanmar which allowed the movement of the people, and now entry into India is allowed only by visa,” he said.
He mentioned that there was a recent violence over a three-day period; however, there have been no major incidents in the last three months.
Sharply reacting to Amit Shah’s announcements on the situation in Manipur, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh took to X and raised a series of questions:
“If the situation in Manipur is as normal as the self-styled Chanakya has made it out to be today,
If the Chief Minister of Manipur is doing as good a job as the self-styled Chanakya has made it out to be today.
If a dialogue process with different communities is under way as has been claimed by the self-styled Chanakya today, then
1. Why hasn’t the non-biological PM found the time and inclination to visit Manipur ever since the state erupted on May 3, 2023??
2. Why hasn’t the non-biological PM met with the political leaders of the state, including the CM, for a meaningful discussion?
3. Why is there no full-time Governor and why has the chief secretary not been in the state for the past 45 days?
4. Why are a number of MLAs and Ministers no longer in the state, and why is the palatial BJP office in Imphal not functioning?”
Manipur had witnessed a relative calm for the past 4-5 months until it was disrupted when Kuki terrorists attacked the villages in fringe areas of the valley with drones strikes and firing of long-range rockets.
So far, more than 200 people have been killed and over 60,000 people have been displaced since the violence erupted on May 3, 2023 in the state.
