Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) chairperson Salam Ulka Devi on Thursday stated that women are not problems but rather the solutions as the rise of women is equated with rise of nation and they should be helped in discovering their wings to fly.
Addressing the 16th foundation day of the commission held with a one-day consultancy programme on ‘Socio-economy and political status of women’ at the Classic Grande, Chingmeirong, Salam Ulka Devi said that Manipur women have been known for their valour, grace, skill, leadership and active involvement in socio, economic, political, education, sports and cultural activities.
She also lamented on the lack of women in politics stating that despite the fact that the number of Manipuri women voters are more than the male voters, women find it difficult to rise in electoral politics against the tradition of male dominance.
The chairperson said that from September, 2021 till September 8, 2022 the Manipur State Commission for Women received 85 numbers of complaint cases of which 68 cases were successfully closed and 17 are still pending. Domestic violence related cases again top the chart of the complaint cases in the commission, she informed.
Since inception, the commission has received 1115 complaint cases and during 2021-22, the commission received the highest number of complaints from Imphal West with 32, followed by Imphal East with 22, Thoubal with 14, Bishnupur and Kakching with 6 each, Churachandpur with 2, Kangpokpi and Chandel with one case each.
Social Welfare minister Heikham Dingo said the socio-economy of the state is poor but efforts of developing are high. Still, the government is facing hardship in bringing changes in the society but if the efforts do not stop, we will surely develop one day, the minister added.
“We are all aware of the roles, the significance, the character and bravery of our women”, said Dingo and added that the political status of women in the state is high and women empowerment in the state is also increasing.
During the technical session, WinG convenor Nonibala Narengbam; Women Action for Development secretary Sobita Mangsatam; School of Humanities DM University dean Professor Ch Sheelaramani; Manipur State Commission for Schedule Tribe member, Tara Manchin Hangzo spoke as resource persons while social worker N Jeevanmala Devi performed as a moderator of the technical session.
The programme was attended by Manipur State Commission for Women member, T Chuongsin Koireng, commission member Thumlip Tiningpham and others commission members.
During the foundation celebration a women's journal ‘Role of Women, volume-1’ was released while the former chairpersons of women commission was also felicitated.
