The department of Ophthalmology, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal observed World Sight Day 2024 under the theme “Prioritize Child Eye Health” held at the General OPD Complex on Thursday.
RIMS director professor G Sunil Kumar Sharma, medical superintendent N Sanjib, dean of academics Brogen Singh Akoijam, and head of the Ophthalmology department Y Chingsuingamba Meitei, among others attended the event, stated a release.
On the occasion, Sunil Kumar underscored the institute’s commitment to serving society through its advanced facilities and high-tech equipment, it mentioned.
He addressed the growing concern over the rising prevalence of vision problems among children due to excessive use of digital devices, noting that approximately 25 per cent of the world population is affected by vision-related issues, it stated.
Parents should take an active role in protecting their children from the harmful effects of prolonged screen exposure. As part of the observance, the director also released a short video focusing on the importance of child eye health and ways to prevent vision impairment, it added.
Meanwhile, a World Mental Health Day 2024 under the theme “It is Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace” was also observed at the Jubilee Hall, RIMS, Imphal organised by the Department of Psychiatry, RIMS, Imphal, it mentioned.
The programme focuses on raising awareness about mental health issues and promoting mental well-being globally, it stated.
The theme highlights the importance of mental health in professional settings, emphasising the need for employers and organisations to create supportive environments that foster well-being, reduce stress, and provide mental health resources for their employees, it added.
