The Tamenglong district administration has finally decided to make Rani Gaidinliu Women’s Market fully functional by December 15 after it was inaugurated two years ago and the maximum seats of the market will be occupied by vegetable vendors.
Speaking to Imphal Free Press, deputy commissioner of Tamenglong Armstrong Pame said that the new market will be occupied by vegetable vendors. He continued that out of 183 seats, 127 have been registered for vegetable vendors. The remaining 56 seats will be allotted through the lottery system, he added.a
The DC also said that the district administration has proposed to construct a new market at the old women’s market site to commemorate the district centenary celebration.
The Rani Gaidinliu Women’s Market was inaugurated on October 30, 2018 by Chief Minister N Biren Singh. It was constructed under the Police Housing Corporation with a budget of Rs 10 crore. Earlier, the district administration had tried to allot seats to vegetable vendors. However, strong opposition broke out among the district administration and vegetable vendors and seat allotment was cancelled.
The district administration has also planned to construct a new badminton hall behind the sports complex gallery, Pame said. He expressed his gratitude to former deputy commissioner of Tamenglong and now director of Tribal Affairs, W Arthur Chiphang for his initiative for setting up infrastructure for the badminton hall.
