Protestors at a relay hunger strike in Uripok Canteen Crossing, Imphal West, on Wednesday raised a question, asking, “Where has Prime Minister Modi’s slogan ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ gone?”

The strike was organised in response to the alleged abduction and killing of six women and children by suspected Kuki militants in Jiribam.

Initiated by the Uripok Apunba Lup, the protest is being supported by 52 local clubs and 48 Meira Paibi groups in the Uripok area, participating in rotation.

The demonstrators shouted slogans demanding justice for the victims and action against the perpetrators.

Speaking on behalf of the protestors, secretary of Uripok Yambem Leikai Meira Paibi, Hijam Minakumari, condemned the government’s silence and lack of action. She questioned Prime Minister Modi’s commitment to the welfare of women, highlighting the irony of the “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” campaign in light of the Jiribam tragedy.

She further questioned the silence of the Prime Minister and demanded that the perpetrators be arrested and given exemplary punishment.

Urging the government to take immediate action, she stated that the protestors pledged to continue the agitation until justice is served.
