As heavy rain continues to lash several parts of Manipur, damaging roads and disrupting power supply in hill districts, Ukhrul district also reported disruption in power supply for three consecutive days as two main electricity poles located at Shimtang village had fallen.
When the Imphal Free Press contacted MSPDCL manager Sothing Kashung on Tuesday morning, he said that when a team led by him went for jungle clearance in their bid to ensure uninterrupted power supply, two major poles near Shimtang village in Ukhrul were found fallen. This was why Ukhrul has been facing power cut.
The power failure is likely to be restored today, he said.
It may be mentioned that since Sunday, power supply has been completely shutdown in the 33 KV sub-stations namely Hungpung, Ukhrul, Talui, Nungpi, Namrei and Jessami areas.
Following the power disruptions, students, and poor populace who could ill-afford alternative power back up have lamented the power crisis and urged the concerned authorities to look into the matter inorder that regular power supply is made available.
In the meanwhile, reliable sources told the IFP that there is no office of the MSPCL in Ukhrul and Kamjong district. "Non-existence of the office has been one of the majored issue in ensuring effective power supply to the populace of the two district," he said.
Providing power supply from 132KV main line starting from Yaingangpokpi to Hundung cement factory is the sole responsibility of the Manipur State Power Corporation Limited (MSPCL) in addition to providing backup line to 33 KV line from Litan to Hundung cement factory in Ukhrul district, sources said, adding that regular power supply to the 33 kv line starting from Hundung to Talui sub- station, Ukhrul sub-station, Namrei sub-station, Nungbi sub-station and Jessami power sub-station is also their bounden responsibility.
Providing 11 KV from any power house to villages transformer is to be handled by the MSPDCL, sources added.
It further stated that once the power supply reaches the power house, all the remaining responsibilities including light, transformer, households connection and revenue issues have to be attended to by the MSPDCL.
