Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep grief on the demise of HE Mikhail Gorbachev.

"I extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of H.E. Mr. Mikhail Gorbachev, one of the leading statesmen of the 20th century who left an indelible mark on the course of history. We recall and value his contribution to strengthening of relations with India," PM tweeted on Thursday.

Gorbachev, who served as President of the Soviet Union from 1990 until the country's dissolution in 1991, passed away on August 30. The farewell ceremony and funeral will take place on September 3, according to reports.
