PM Modi's narrative to pass on Manipur tragedy as normal just because few business and educational establishments are running is a poor attempt to mask the reality, Bimol Akoijam said.

Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam on Wednesday ridiculed the Prime Minister’s theatrical speech in the Parliament and stated that Narendra Modi’s entire statement was an attempt to normalise the abnormality in Manipur.

“His entire speech reflected a subtle attempt to normalise the abnormal. His narrative to pass on Manipur tragedy as normal just because few business and educational establishments are running is a poor attempt to mask the reality,” he said.

Speaking to the media at his residence in Imphal, the MP questioned on the de facto partition between the hills and valley and the inability of valley dwellers to access hill areas and vice versa.

“What about the thousands languishing in relief camps? The students from both communities who were driven out, what about them?” he asked.

He also condemned the alleged de facto implementation of President’s Rule (PR) in Manipur by violating the constitution.

The state government operates in suspended animation on the directives of the centre even though we are made to believe that is not the case, he added.

He further questioned if the state government had been turned into a proxy government and also asked why the central forces did not follow the state directives if that was not the case.

He highlighted that thousands of central forces had been deployed in mAnipur since the start of the crisis and as such, he questioned how such a violent conflict was allowed to unfold amid their presence.

“As a member of the Opposition, it is my duty to convey the emotions and cry of the people. It is the duty of the government to initiate actions on established violations of deforestation, SoO and illegal immigrants,” he said.

He expressed gratitude to the prime minister for finally speaking on the 14-month-old Manipur tragedy but maintained that statement lacked genuine concern and emotional honesty.
