In a significant demonstration, a sizable group of persons with disabilities staged a sit-in protest on Monday at Naoremthong area in Imphal West.
The protest marks the first-ever display of solidarity by the community of persons with disabilities seeking restoration of peace since the outbreak of communal clashes.
During the protest, the participants held up placards with messages such as "Save Manipur" and "Restore Peace," among others, emphasising their plea for a return to normalcy.
One of the protesters, N Jayabala, while speaking to the media, highlighted the challenges faced by more than hundred persons with disabilities currently seeking shelter in various relief camps across the valley district.
She addressed the issue of inadequate infrastructure, particularly the lack of suitable bathroom, toilet facilities, which has been a source of hardship for their colleagues in the camps.
In a heartfelt appeal, Jayabala called upon the Social Welfare department to take immediate action to address these infrastructural shortcomings and ensure that the relief camps provide facilities that accommodate the specific needs of the differently-abled individuals.
Furthermore, she requested both the state and central governments to prioritise the restoration of peace in the region as soon as possible.
This plea is aimed at enabling persons with disablities to return safely to their homes, away from the unrest and turmoil currently plaguing Manipur, she added.
