At least one person died and six others were injured in a road mishap at Wangjing-Lamding Keithel under the jurisdiction of Thoubal Police station on Tuesday night, at around 8 pm.
Sources said that a Maruti Suzuki SX4 car bearing registration number MN05 A 5479 was on its way to Khongjom from Thoubal when it hit an Eeco Van bearing registration number MN01 AS 1338, which was parked at the roadside near Wangjing-Lamding keithel. The incident killed a woman and left six persons injured, including a 13-year-old girl.
The deceased has been identified as one 41-year-old Ningombam, Nonibala, daughter of Memchoubi of Singjamei Waikhom Leikai and the injured were identified as one Loubuktongbam Inaobi (46) of Gobindagram, Tongbram Kiranbala (42) of Keishamthong, Kiran Devi (42) of Nagamapal, Th Kiranbala (45) of Bamol Kampu, her 13-year-old daughter Prithibi Sembi and driver of the eeco van, Loubuktongbam Bobin Sharma (44), son of (L) Momon of Gobindagram Makha Leikai.
They were taken to Thoubal district hospital but later referred to RIMS hospital during which, Nonibala succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. The injured are undergoing treatment at RIMS hospital.
According to sources, the deceased and injured are women vendors of Khwairamband bazar. They went to Wangjing-Lamding keithel on Tuesday regarding the mass women protest to be held on Wednesday.
The sources added that the Maruti car driver also got injured in the mishap. Police failed to identify the driver as he is in an unconscious state at RIMS and he appears to be a Muslim. Thoubal police have registered a case on the incident.
