A group of progressive Manipuri women under the banner of Ningols United Progressive Initiative (NUPI) organised a candlelight vigil at Palika Bazar in Connaught Place, New Delhi, expressing strong condemnation of a recent attack that took the lives of two elderly Meitei men and resulted in the abduction of six civilians, including women and minors.
The organisation described the incident as a “barbaric and cowardly act of terrorism” and highlighted the ongoing suffering of displaced Meitei families. According to NUPI, the victims were part of a group of 13 displaced Meitei individuals who had been forced from their homes in June and were living near the CRPF camp in Jakuradhor, close to the Borobekra police station.
In a press release, NUPI’s members emphasised the severity of the situation in Manipur since violence erupted on May 3, 2023, allegedly instigated by cross-border Kuki militants. They condemned the recent abduction as a gross violation of human rights, particularly highlighting the trauma inflicted on women and children.
The group called for immediate action from the central government and state leaders, urging them to secure the safe return of the abducted individuals. NUPI also made a humanitarian appeal to those responsible, asking for the release of the civilians.
With messages of solidarity, the organizers underscored the importance of unity against violence and terrorism, expressing hope for peace and justice in Manipur.
