There are no rival candidates to contest with the National People’s Party (NPP) candidate in Saikul assembly constituency as most of them are either elderly politicians or innocent ones who are like “newborn babies who are taking part in the contest as practice,” said NPP candidate Seikholal Haokip on Saturday.
He was speaking to the media on the sidelines of his flag hoisting ceremony held at his residence located at Catholic Colony, Lamlongei Mantripukhri, Imphal East in the presence of deputy chief minister Y Joykumar.
Concerning NPP’s decision to contest the coming election, he said that there are about more than 2,000 political parties across the country but only eight are recognised as national political parties. Among the eight political parties, NPP is one and with its vision of ‘one voice, one north east’, NPP can bring a change in the Northeastern region including Manipur, he added.
Haokip further said that if all the representatives of Northeastern states including MP of both houses of the Parliament happened to be elected from NPP, then the voice of Northeastern states could be made louder on the floor of Parliament. With this goal, NPP is fielding candidates in the 2022 election, said Haokip.
In Saikul assembly constituency, eight candidates including sitting MLA, Yamthong Haokip will be contesting as BJP candidate, he added.
NPP national vice president Yumnam Joykumar who is also the deputy chief minister attended the function as chief guest.
