Clarifying that there is no issue with the 27 alphabet Meitei Mayek scripts, the secretary organisation of Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillol Apunba Lup (MEELAL), N Nongmailembi Leima warned individuals circulating false information regarding Meitei Mayek to immediately stop their activities.
Leima said it has come to the notice of MEELAL that some vested interest individuals are misleading the mass on the social media branding the 27 alphabets scripts as “Manipur Mayek”. Moreover, these rumour mongers are also claiming that there is an issue with the 27 alphabet Meitei Mayek scripts, she said.
The MEELAL secretary organisation pointed out that the 27 alphabet scripts was unanimously approved after due consultation with scholars, and academicians among others to be the official script of the state. Subsequently, it was published in the Official Gazette of the state and has also been included in the academic syllabus since 2006.

She further said that a resolution was also adopted to convert all the local newspapers currently using Bengali script to Meetei Mayek from the early month of 2023.
People should promote the use of Meetei Mayek script rather than debating the legitimacy of the 27 alphabet scripts that have been approved by the state.
