Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) on Tuesday denied the attempt to bury Kukis, supposedly killed in the ongoing clash, at Torbung on August 3 and asserted that the same is a provocation of further violence in the conflict-torn state.
Slain Chin-Kuki narco-terrorists cannot be buried at the Sericulture Firm in Torbung Bangla in Bishnupur district beyond Churachandpur district boundary, COCOMI firmly stated in a release. ‘Such move is an affront to the people’ it said.
They can be buried at the cemeteries in Churachandpur or have their rites performed within the district, it maintained. It went on to mention the terror attacks continuously carried out by the armed militants against Meitei civilians, damaging their properties, abduction etc.
It urged the state government to prohibit such illegal moves on time and warned that COCOMI, along with the public, will block the burial attempt. It further warned the government to bear responsibility should any unwanted incident occur.
It also condemned the central security forces for allegedly remaining idle during the atrocities carried out by the Kuki militants. It further demanded strict enforcement of the law in the hill areas the same way it’s being enforced in the valley areas.
Meanwhile, Manipur Women Convention (MWC) on Tuesday strongly rejected the proposed burial site of Kukis, supposedly killed during the crisis, at Torbung Bangla and warned that an intense non-cooperation movement would erupt if the authorities concerned did not stop and prevent the burial timely.
The convention advised those concerned not to invoke the ancestral warring instinct of the Meitei community by infringing on the community’s patience.
Speaking to the media at Manipur Press Club in Majorkhul, MWC member Asem Nirmala maintained that the notification to bury Kukis, reportedly killed during the crisis at, Torbung Bangla, which is a Meitei area, was completely outrageous.
The Meiteis scrammed out of Torbung Bangla because of the violent attacks by suspected Kuki militants and to notify that they will bury their dead at the place is a direct insult to the people and authorities, she added.
She called upon both central and state governments to stop the plan and warned that the Meitei women in Manipur would not remain mute if the burials took place by force. The government will be accountable for any untoward incident that spills out if the burial took place, she cautioned.
She stated that the reckless actions of the Kukis had led to people wondering if the Kuki separate administration demand had been fulfilled.
If the government is unable to protect Manipur let the people protect the state, she added.
