The non-teaching contractual staff of NIT, Manipur on Friday launched a pen-down strike and staged a sit-in protest in front of the administrative block of the institute at Lamphelpat in Imphal West demanding job regularisation.
Speaking to the media, a protestor (contractual staff) S Surjit informed that the institute has not taken up any welfare policy of the contractual staff though they have been working round the clock for more than 12 years.
Surprisingly, the assistant professors of the institute were promoted to professor in only three years, which has never happened in the state, he added.
He said, of the total 72 non-teaching staff, only 10 are regular staff and the remaining 62 are facing a great hurdle in running their family due to their small wages.
Pointing out that all the contractual staff has reached the age bar limit to search for other jobs, he appealed to the authority concerned to consider appointing them as regular staff.
“We will continue the pen-down strike until our demand is met,” he added
