The North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) strongly condemned the diktat issued by an outfit in Mizoram to Manipuris residing there.

It also demanded that protection should be accorded to the people of Manipur in Mizoram by the state government.

NEFIS, in a press statement, recalled that as per reports, the organisation has asked the Manipuris living in Mizoram to “leave for their safety”, after the May 4 incident video surfaced on the internet. This amounts to seeking retribution for those unconnected to the incidents of violence in Manipur, it added.

It mentioned that this might even trigger more provocation against the communities residing in the other neighbouring states as retaliation culminating in a vicious cycle of violence and animosity among the communities in the entire region.

Thus, NEFIS appeals to all communities to come together against all violence and to take a step back and put forth all the contentious issues for deliberation and larger consultation. In this respect, a Truth and Reconciliation Commission should be established to ensure justice and peace in Manipur, NEFIS stated.

“NEFIS stands for the rights of the working masses including those who migrate to other states for better life prospects. The migrants have a reciprocal relationship with their place of residence. They contribute to the state’s economy and have every right to safety and security accorded to the other residents of the state,” it mentioned.
